It’s hard to believe that 2017 is nearly over! I just reread the last post of 2016, which ended with: So… what’s next? What’s in store for 2017? More writing, for sure. Daily drawing! Yoga! The rest, time will tell…
Celebrations, successes, challenges, losses, and everything in between has made this year uniquely its own. After reading other posts, looking through my calendar, and skimming through photos on my computer (thank goodness for those!), I’m reminded of all that has happened this year.
My Top Ten Events From 2017 (In Chronological Order):
- Visiting friends in different places
- Participating in the Women’s March in Washington, DC
- Co-coordinating a school community event
- Presenting at the National Art Education Conference in New York City
- Trip to Costa Rica
- Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirrors” art exhibit
- Artwork commissions (chair and table)
- Our honeymoon (which ended up being closer to our first anniversary than the actual wedding because of the timing with the school year)
- Lovelight Yoga & Arts Festival
- Our first anniversary
There were so many other memorable events from 2017!
I remember writing the first post of the year and setting some ongoing intentions for myself. Some of my priorities have shifted over the year, and I’m ok with that. As I read through that first post, I realized that perhaps I was trying to pack too much into my daily routine. Daily writing and drawing practices have been more challenging to keep up with than they originally seemed.
This year I have had opportunities to create artworks that expanded my comfort zone. Instead of using my daily drawing journal, I have been using a separate sketchbook to create mandalas and other doodle-like drawings that evolve as I work on them. I appreciate the convenience of beginning a piece and coming back to it days or even weeks later.
Yoga has really become an important part of my wellbeing. I practice yoga at the local studio about 3-4 times a week, and I am developing a home practice which will continue to evolve. I see the growth and strength (both physical and mental) that has developed with this practice.
It’s inspiring to see the new year as a chance to turn the page, start over, and/or continue on the journey of becoming our best selves. I am certainly embracing the process.
Here’s to a fantastic new year!
